‘AHA’AINA A Royal Celebration Jan 04

'AHA'AINA Program

‘AHA’AINA  is not your typical luau, in fact before what we know as luau’s today there was ‘AHA’AINA -a feast of food, mele(song) and hula. Hawaiian people have been coming together since ancient times to celebrate momentous occasions, they called these gatherings ‘AHA’AINA (which translated means gathering for a meal). It is only fitting that this  Royal Celebration is held on the lawn at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. The Royal Hawaiian is situated on sacred grounds and this celebration honors its location by telling the story of the land’s history through food, song, stories, hula and cultural displays.
With the majestic backdrop of the Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head standing proud in the back ground, the ‘Aha’Aina production is composed of three acts.  As guests enter the oceanfront luau for the evening, displays of traditional Hawaiian cultural activities such as poi-pounding, kapa-making (cloth made from pounding bark) and na lawai’a (tending of fishing tools)are available.
Breathtaking setting

Guest are called to the feast by the sound of a pu (conch shell) once guest are seated, the storyteller begins the evening by explaining the true significance of lei giving and how important  ancient Waikiki was to Hawaiian society. Pristine shoreline once dotted by loko i’a (fishponds) and together with the fertile marshlands were cultivated with lush lo’i kalo (taro patches) and sustained thousands of Hawaiians living along the Waikiki shoreline. Through the acts of ‘AHA’AINA  guest revisit this dynamic community, as it might have been found centuries ago and share a greater cultural understanding of ancient Hawaiian society.

Instead of luau buffet lines, guests of ‘AHA’AINA  enjoy sit down dinner service, open bar and incredibly talented entertainment. As dishes of exotic and savory specialties are served, the storyteller shares about the gathering and preparation of traditional Hawaiian cuisine. To ancient Hawaiians  food was a gift that was to be treasured and shared among family and friends.
The Story

As the Helumoa(the legendary playground of Hawaiian Royalty where The Royal Hawaiian now stands) story unfolds, guest are introduced to Ka’auhelemoa, the mythical rooster that scratched the earth that would become the famed Helumoa coconut grove. As the story continues  guest are introduced to Kamehameha’s 1795 Warriors, 1800’s: Monarchy Fashion Show woth Royal Guard, 1927: Surfing legends the Royal Hawaiian Beach Boys, 1940‘s: The U.S. Military takes over the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, 1950’s-1960’s: Hawai’i Calls Tribute and 1970’s: Supper Club performances, concluding with a Samoan Fire Knife Dance. Lastly, Aloha’Oe is sung by the composer, Hawai’i’s Queen Lili’uokalani- the song of love and farewell.
