Maui Mermaids

Yes, mermaids do exist! Well at least on Maui you have the opportunity to be one and swim in the beautiful blue of the Pacific. I always encourage my clients to get away from their resort and explore the island they are visiting, and from personal experience it is always so much better when you go with a private tour provider, especially for ocean sports.  Hawaii Mermaid Adventures empower humans to transform into mermaids and explore the beautiful blue of the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii Mermaid Adventures is committed to providing the fun experience of a lifetime while protecting the ocean by  supporting the Hawaii Ecotourism Association

Let’s go Upcountry Maui Dec 11

Going Upcountry Maui is as much a state of mind as it is an area of Maui, starting at Pukalani, climbing the slopes of magnificent Haleakala to the communities of Makawao, Kula, Keokea and Ulupalakua.

Wind thru green pastures

Rural Makawao welcomes visitors with hitching posts fronting the boutiques, restaurants and art galleries that are part of the eclectic personality of the area. Voted one of the top 25 arts-related travel destinations in the country, Makawao is the home of the Hui No’eau visual arts center. The center housed in a plantation-era estate home treats visitors to ongoing classes and exhibitions. If you happen to be visiting Maui over the Fourth of July weekend be sure and make time for the Makawao Rodeo, and take in the Paniolo(Hawaiian cowboy) spirit found here.

The farming community of Kula is best known as the home of some of the island’s freshest produce, especially the delicious Kula onion which is incorporated into most local dishes served on the island. Allow time to see the beautiful protea flowers and aromatic lavender at Ali’i Kula Lavender , just beyond Kula you will find the 20,000 acre Ulupalakua Ranch and Tedeschi Winery and Surfing Goat Dairy.

Ho’okipa Beach Park  attracts pro windsurfers and kite surfers in the winter months when conditions are roughest. Waves on the north shore are huge and make it the perfect place to watch these professionals perform but please heed all posted safety signs if visiting during the winter months. In the summer months this stretch of shoreline is the perfect place to swim and sunbathe or just relax in the sun.

Pa’ia is the perfect place to shop for the perfect gift for friends and family amongst colorful, plantation-era storefronts and boutiques. Shop for surf gear and locally produced art, jewelry and clothing have lunch at one of the ethnic eateries in town or just a short drive to Mama’s Fish House.

If you plan on driving the Road to Hana, you will travel through Upcountry so take time to enjoy the view and enjoy the Upcountry experience. If you have the time there are several lovely bed and breakfast as well as small inns for visitors to stay Upcountry as well.

Top 3 Reasons to visit Ulupalakua Ranch Aug 28
Wind thru green pastures

Wind thru green pastures

Store

I.  The first reason to visit Ulupalakua Ranch – Upcountry Maui is to take the time to drive through lush green pastureland as you drive the winding road that leads to the ranch. Jaw-dropping views of the island below are amazing. Fringed by 150-year-old trees spreading their canopy of shade over the Ranch Store & Grill and Tedeschi Winery just across the street are just waiting to share their story to visitors. Whether you set out to drive just to the Ranch Store or Winery, or if you are on your way to/from driving the Road to Hana you do not want to miss the beautiful drive to the Ulupalakua Ranch.

Maui Cattle Co. Beef

II. The second reason to take the time to visit Ulupalakua Ranch would be the slow-roasted Maui Cattle Co. beef brisket with housemade BBQ sauce and olive-oil-and-parsley smashed  potatoes. Sit at a picnic table in the shade of the towering trees, and slip back to a by gone era of 150 years ago when ranch hands also took a break in the shade to enjoy a plate of Maui beef and a cold drink.

III. The third reason is Chef Will Munder – his goal to serve only Maui-grown produce (he also has his own micro farm in Kula). Chef Will’s personal favorite is the juicy Ulupalakua lamb burger with swiss cheese, Waipoli lettuce, sweet Kula onions and ripe tomato.  Visitors have always been able to step up to the counter and order great food but Chef Will has put some new twist on some of the long standing favorites and made everything better. Now everything is made from scratch and as local as possible. The Ulupalakua lamb, beef and famous Elk Burger are part of the commitment of the ranch to serve only meat from the Ranch or from Maui.  And not to worry if you have a GLUTEN ALLERGY like me, I can still have my personal favorite Maui Cattle Co Beef burger on a Gluten Free Roll, my treat of grilled Maui Gold Pineapple for desert.

The open-air grill is fired up at 10 am with Grill Hours from 1100am to 300pm – so plan accordingly –

Take time to shop at the Ulupalakua Store where everything inside the store will put a smile on your face or remind you of times gone by with lots of simple things like red bandanas, silver belt buckles, cowboy hats, jars of ‘olelo berry jam, music by Maui musicians and art by local Maui artists.

After all the motto at the Ulupalakua Ranch is “Happy People” – be sure and take a “selfie” while sitting on the weathered wooden bench on the lanai next to one of the grinning scalawags (created by historic sculptor Reems Mitchell) I dare you try not to grin back at them.

The benefits of using a Travel Agent to book your trip to Hawaii May 22

Many clients are used to booking their own flights on line, researching hotels and destinations, but when it comes to booking a difficult multi-island itinerary to Hawaii, the benefits of using a professional travel agent to assist you in putting together the many components of these itineraries are many. Hawaii master destination specialist such as myself, have spent years visiting the islands many times, at least once a year to keep up with the current status of resorts, new restaurants and activities that have become available so they can share this information with their clients. One main benefit of our many trips to the islands is the personal relationships we maintain with the sales teams on property at the preferred resorts throughout the islands which is the next best thing to us personally being on island to take care of our clients. A trip to Hawaii is on most everyone’s bucket list, regardless of the reason they are planning a trip to the islands, and personally I try my very best to make sure that the itineraries are as close to the perfect for each client as possible.

**  First thing to consider is how do you decide which island(s) you wish to visit?  What airline works the best from  your home city? Will you need transfers or rental car ?

** What resort experience are you looking for ? Luxury resort with first class amenities? small boutique resort? Directly on the Beach? Nearby restaurants and activities? Are amazing swimming pools important to you?

Contemporary island décor

** What activities are you looking to do? Is there a special activity such as Pearl Harbor or Volcano National Park that you want to include in your itinerary? Do you want to zipline, snorkel, get surf lessons, see waterfalls? A Hawaii specialist agent will be able help you work through your wish list and help you figure out which ones you will be able to fit into your schedule.

** Hawaii destination specialist will be able to recommend the best restaurants, make suggestions about fun tours and activities, suggest the best travel dates to avoid peak season charges.

** Hawaii destination specialist can assist you with planning your Destination Wedding, whether just for the two of you or making arrangements for a group.

So do yourself a favor, work with a professional travel agent, preferably a Hawaii Master Destination Specialist such as Linda Dancer, save yourself a lot of time and stress and ensure you will have the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii.

Old Lahaina Luau Mar 27

Known as the most authentic Hawaiian luau, the Old Lahaina Luau on Maui is celebrating its 29th year of aloha in 2015. Located on the historic grounds of Moali’i , the multi talented cast of dancers, chanters and musicians guide visitors through the story of old Hawai’i in a direct oceanfront setting.

Before the Luau begins visitors are encouraged to check in early to learn about cultural experiences such as pounding poi, husking coconut or even learning how to hula. Then enjoy a beachside sunset and the best of food and entertainment the islands have to offer. I strongly suggest to my clients that they book in advance as it does sell out nightly.

Old Lahaina Luau is located oceanfront at 1251 Front Street, Lahaina,HI 96761

** Destination Weddings are arranged through White Orchid Weddings on the Luau grounds.

Mama’s Fish House Restaurant Nov 21
Look for the Boat

Look for the Boat

Mama’s Fish House, Maui’s first fresh fish restaurant was born in 1973. The Christenson family fell in love with the lifestyle of old Polynesia as they sailed across the South Pacific in the late 1950’s, finally settling on Maui in 1963. Along the way they learned many ways to prepare fresh fish and to share the aloha spirit. Nestled in a beautiful oceanfront coconut grove, the converted beach house restaurant is an eclectic mixture of Polynesian artifacts, wood working, flower arrangements and artwork.

The award winning menu and level of service (Ely is my personal favorite waiter – his suggestions of what to order are always great) make for an unforgettable dining experience in Hawaii. Do yourself and favor and do not skip desert the Polynesia Black Pearl and Hana Banana Macadamia Nut Crisp  are both amazing – order one of each and share

Reservations are always suggested – Call 808-579-8488  but definitely worth the wait. Make a fun day of it and visit the nearby town of Paia.

Located just past Mile Marker #8 on the Hana Highway – Look for the Mama’s Fish House Boat on the Left (shown above)

Lunch served daily  11am-3pm   Dinner served daily  415pm -9pm

NaWahi Pana (Respecting Hawaiian Sacred Sites) Jul 11

When visiting the many sacred sites throughout the Hawaii Islands you must first understand the history, the usage of the site and the spirituality of the place. Developing the proper attitude of humility helps you to shift your focus from  yourself to your surroundings. Before approaching sacred sites, traditional protocol requires you ask permission of the kupuna(ancestors) and give thanks for the privilege of visiting and to apologize for any negative energy you might bring to the site. Always respect the boundaries and kupu(off limits) areas of the sacred sites. If not marked, use the outer edge of the stone markers that normally surround the sites as your boundary.

SITES TO VISIT :

Heiau were constructed under the direction of the ali’i nui (high chiefs) and Kahuna (priests)- these Heiau were dedicated  to different Gods for various purposes such as treating the sick and training in the art of healing, dedicated to the war -god Ku , and dedicated for peace, fertility and agricultural productivity.

A number of heiau and whai pana can be visited in various national, state and county parks, botanical gardens and resort communities- some suggestions are:

Hawai’i Island

Pu’ukohola Heiau National Historic Site, Hapaiali’i Heiau at Keauhou Resort and Hale O Keawe,Piu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

Kaua’i

Wailua Complex of Heiau,Wailua River State Park(Hikinaakala,Kalaeokamanu & Poliahu Heiau)

Maui

Haleki’i-Pihana Heiau State Historic Park

Oahu

Pu’u O Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site and Kukaniloko Birthstones State Historic Site Nation

To Learn More & Get Directions check out these sites:

Department of Land & Natural Resources Division of State Parks ; National Park Service Hawai’i Parks ;  National Tropical Botanical Garden Kahanu Garden,Haha Maui

Please Take Note: Since Hawaiians used a technique called pa pohaku or dry stone masonry these sites are very fragile so please do not walk on or over any of these structures  for your safety and for the protection of the sites to help preserve these sacred sites for the future.
