Holo Holo Charters Feb 26

Regardless of the Hawaiian Islands that you choose to visit you really must get out and explore the island. If you are visiting the island of Kaua’i you must take a boat tour of the Napali Coast and I suggest you book your boat tour with Holo Holo Charters.

Kevin & Marcie Millett

Kevin & Marcie Millett

Holo Holo was founded in 1997 by Kevin and Marcie Millet with a simple idea – to build amazing high speed boats that could handle Kauai’s challenging ocean conditions and share the amazing natural beauty along the Napali Coast and the forbidden island of Niihau with visitors. Recognized as one of Hawaii’s premier multi-hull designer boat builders, Kevin Millet used his skills to design and build custom performance catamarans operated by Holo Holo Charters and together with his wife Marcie and an exceptional staff, passengers are treated to a first-class vacation experience.

Five fun outdoor activities on Kaua’i Oct 24

With only ten percent of Kaua’i’s landscape accessible by road, to make the most of your visit to Kaua’i you have to get out of your car and go exploring. So many options are available to you from hiking, biking, horseback riding, mountain tubing, ATV adventures probably more options that you will have time for during your stay on the island.

Five of my favorites are :

Riding at Princeville Ranch

Riding at Princeville Ranch

Horseback Riding – ride along bluffs, across foothills, across sugar cane fields past secluded beaches and across working ranches. A variety of companies offer guided tours ranging from 90 minutes to five hours – some will include hiking and a swim in a natural pool below a waterfall. Some offer private tours as well. One of my personal favorites is with Princeville Ranch.

Zipline

Zipline

Zipline- soar like a bird while safely harnessed over some of Kauai’s lush green landscape. Kaua’i is so tropical with so much natural beauty even zip over a hidden waterfall.

Stand up paddle boarding

Stand up paddle boarding

River Kayaking and Standup Paddle Boarding  -whether  a nice easy paddle along the Wailua River to the famed Fern Grotto, the Huel’ia River to the Menehune Fishpond  or on the Hanalei River. For those that want something with a little more action ocean kayaking is available the summer months, hire a guide for the best experience.

Hiking in the Waimea Canyon

Hiking in the Waimea Canyon

Hiking  – A hiker’s paradise there are so many options depending upon skill level – one popular spot is the Waimea Canyon. Koke’e State Park offers more than 40 miles of footpaths leading to scenic lookouts. The Kalalau Trail along the Napali Coast is the island’s most famous and most challenging at 11 miles. Other popular hikes include Kuilau, Moalepe and Powerline Trailhead. Plan ahead – maps are available through the Department of Land and Natural Resources and the Division of State Parks for more hiking information. For your safety never hike alone and be sure and tell someone where you are going.

Mountain Tubing

Mountain Tubing

Mountain Tubing – It is okay to act like a kid when you do this fun activity-grab an inner tube and enjoy your trip down the river. Sturdy tubes let you float down through Kauai’s interior past breathtaking natural beauty. Guided tours, basic instructions and safety equipment provided. My personal favorite is Kauai Backcountry Adventures (photo courtesy of KBA) in addition to mountain tubing they also have some great zipline tours.

Plantation Gardens Restaurant and Bar May 15

Located in a beautifully restored plantation manor home dating back to the 1930’s on the island of Kauai, the Plantation Gardens Restaurant & Bar offers visitors and residents alike an amazing dining option. Once the plantation manager’s home for Hawaii’s first sugar plantation “The Koloa Plantation”, the property was later purchased by the Moir family who proceeded to build the world famous gardens, so many beautiful orchids and lily ponds, around their home. Once the site of some of the most elaborate social gatherings held on Kauai in their day the gracious atmosphere that once welcomed guest to this Kauai home is now offered to visitors of Plantation Gardens Restaurant and Bar. Visitors touring the Koloa Heritage Trail should plan to include a visit to Plantation Gardens Restaurant and Bar to their schedule.

“Playing with Sticks”- New addition to McBryde Garden on Kaua’i Mar 13
McBryde Garden

McBryde Garden

I am excited to share with you the newest addition to the McBryde Garden on Kaua’i celebrating the 50th anniversary of the non profit National Tropical Botanical Garden created by environmental artist Patrick Dougherty. Woven completely from plant materials gathered from the garden, the domed structure resides in a shady spot overlooking the garden. Rising up 25-feet high into the tree canopy, the 25-foot wide circular structure can be explored by visitors on McBryde’s self-guided tour. View the beautiful gardens from within the dome and  get a bird’s eye view of the gardens below. Built through a process the artist calls “playing with sticks” thus the name for this wonderful new addition to McBryde Garden.

Ke Ala Hele Makalae Trail Jan 30
Ke Ala Hele Makalae

Ke Ala Hele Makalae

Ke Ala Hele Makalae is Hawaiian for “The Path that goes by the Coast” and what a fitting name for the shared-use path that runs along Kauai’s eastern coast. Completed in 2009, visitors can now walk, bike or run 4.1 miles between the Lihi Boat Ramp in central Kapaa and Ahihi Point in Kealia, as well as bike through 2.5 miles through Lyndgate Park.  Future plans to expand Ke Ala Hele Makalae will create an uninterrupted bridge between Anahola in the north to Nawiliwili in the south.  The flat terrain and lack of big hills makes the Ke Ala Hele Makale trail a perfect opportunity to leisurely bike along parts of Kauai’s eastern shoreline and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Several companies offer bike rentals.

Other biking tours are available on Kaua’i as well and more information can be found on Go Hawaii Website

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge-Kaua’i Dec 12
Kilauea Lighthouse

Kilauea Lighthouse

Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Kaua’i  changed the days it is open to the public in 2014 – so make sure before you plan your itinerary when visiting the north shore of Kaua’i that you make note of these changes so you will not be disappointed. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reduced the days Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is open to the public from seven days a week to five days a week – specifically Tuesday – Saturday  from 1000am – 400pm except most major holidays.

Due to declining budgets, the department felt this move necessary to be able to continue necessary work on the sanctuary – this change was to be evaluated at the end of a one year trial period – so will post later if this changes again.

The Kilauea refuge was established to preserve and enhance seabird nesting colonies and is home to some of the largest populations of nesting seabirds found in the Hawaiian Islands. Visitors often have the opportunity to view spinner dolphins and monk seals, native Hawaiian coastal plants and the Hawaiian state bird the endangered Nene Goose. Probably most well known is the historic Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse which sits on the northernmost point of Kaua’i  allowing visitors to view a piece of history as well as the many bird colonies on the cliffs.
