Exciting updates at Disney Aulani Nov 29
Aulani -

Disney Aulani –

As if  Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu was not wonderful to begin, several improvements  to the resort have recently been made including:

** A new family pool and new kids’ splash zone in the already popular Waikolohe Valley water play area

** Two new quick-service dining locations **  New adults-only area featuring the Wailana Pool gives adults looking for a little privacy on a family-friendly resort a perfect place to relax- Although the Wailana Pool Bar isn’t a swim-up, the secluded location near the Laniwai Spa makes up for this especially at Happy Hour.**Enhanced water-slides  one  a volcano-inspired, fast and covered experience / the other slow and open air– be prepared to wait in line as these are very popular**New infinity pool and grotto at Ka Maka Landing adds a touch of glamour to the property.

Menehune Bridge

Menehune Bridge

The Menehune Bridge was already a blast for children, but  toddlers will now also enjoy playing at the new Keiki Cove– encircled by lounge chairs for attentive parents, allowing parents with different ages of children to keep an eye on those playing on the Menehune Bridge and those that are younger and would best be suited for Keiki Cove or for a change of pace everyone can grab an inner-tube and take a ride down the lazy river of the Waikolohe Stream.

** More value price point food options have been added for families  – The Ulu Café – take away alternative as is Little Opihi – a beachfront option. Improvements to the Public Spaces  include : ** New Luxury retail store   ** Expansion and additions to the lawn  area  for events  such as the Starlit Hui Show a guest favorite, weddings, and group events.

Exploring Hawaiian Culture Nov 01

Flower Lei

The Hawaiian Lei is a garland made most often from a variety of fresh flowers and for many the symbol of ALOHA welcoming visitors to the islands, but it also plays a huge role historically as one of the romantic icons of Hawaiian Culture for it is given as a gesture of love.  Women normally prefer the fresh blossoms of tropical flowers such as orchids while men prefer the glossy maile vine draped untied around the neck.
**Take the smell of your fresh lei home with you by purchasing at the airport after you clear security check point or many shops will arrange for your lei to be packaged and shipped directly to your home.

Amazing WillieK

Hawaiian Music such as local favorite WillieK shown here plays a huge part in Hawaiian Culture and through out the islands there are several Slack Key Guitar and ‘ukulele festivals and weekly performances for visitors to enjoy check with your hotel concierge to see who might be playing. I have purchased several of these Hawaiian music CD’s to transport me back to the islands. In addition to Slack Key and ‘ukulele look for performances of Hawaiian reggae, hip hop and modern beats as well.

Hula

Born in Hawai’i the Hula uses the entire body to tell the story of myths and legends of Hawaiian culture. Hula tells the story through dance, stories, language, chants, mele(song), as well as through the plants  that many of the instruments and adornments the performers wear are made from.
The world’s premier hula event-The Merrie Monarch(named  after King David Kalakaua) is held every year on Hawai’i Island, the week long festival features both kahiko ancient hula(before 1820) and ‘auwana modern hula(after 1915). **King Kalakaua felt that “Hula” is the language of the heart, and the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.

Lei Making Classes

Throughout the islands, resorts (such as Hyatt Regency Waikiki shown here)offer cultural lessons such as lei making and hula lessons so check with your hotel concierge to see what opportunities might be available for you to enjoy.
Hawai’i is an experience that stays in your heart forever-enhance your experience by participating in Hawaiian Culture.

Five of my favorite Luaus Oct 25

Smith's Family Luau

For over fifty years the Smith Family Garden Luau as been hosting visitors on the island of Kaua’i, celebrating the spirit of Aloha.
Located within the Smith’s Tropical Paradise in the Wailua Marina State Park on the east side of the island, on grounds once reserved for Hawaiian royalty. Your evening begins as you receive your shell lei and you either take a narrated tram tour or a leisurely stroll around the 30-acre garden, but be advised the last tram tour departs at 530pm.
As with all luaus the main part of a luau for most is the feast, and you will not be disappointed, but for those that can’t wait for the music and tradidtional show they are in for a treat as well with Hawaiian hula, Tahitian drum dances and popular Samoan fire knife dance.
** Great location for destination weddings

Drums of the Pacific

Drums of the Pacific Luau at the Hyatt Regency Maui, sunset terrace on Ka’anapali Beach,Maui. Drums of the Pacific Polynesian Spectacular (a Tihati Production) offers takes guests on a visit throughout the Islands of Polynesia, beginning with the traditional imu ceremony, featuring dances from old Hawaii,Samoa,Fiji,New Zealand,Tahiti,Tonga and Rarotonga.
Guest are greated with a shell lei and mai tai or fruit punch, traditional arts and crafts demonstrations, torch lighting ceremony, all you can eat buffet with dessert bar,  and open bar –  general  and preferred seating available.

Old Lahaina Luau

Old Lahaina Luau – a Traditional Hula and feast – winner year after year for many awards including Best Luau and Best of Maui.
Located oceanfront at 1251 Front Street, Lahaina, Maui the location and layout of the traditional luau grounds  around a circular performance platform affords everyone a great view. This Luau  sells out nightly, so reservations in advance are a must. Also a great location for destination weddings
Guest are greated with a flower lei greeting, tropical drink and personalized souvenir program, then escorted to your table and familiarized with the Luau grounds. The feast a wonderful buffet  and  premium open bar, at sunset the entertainment begins, the Hula is performed with respect and honor to ancient Hawaii – telling the story from Polynesian migration, the relationship of the Missionaries and the Merry Monarch (King Kalakaua) up to the more contemporty Hula.

Feast of Lele

Feast of LeLe is not your average luau, as the sun begins to set over the romantic, intimate oceanfront setting –The perfect luau for foodies.
Excellent  food is served plated  and served as courses, as opposed to buffet style of most other luaus throughout the islands. Another feature that I like is the layout of the tables  as opposed to long tables that are found at many luaus. Attention paid to every detail of  the evening.
I strongly suggest you book far in advance because it is likely to be sold out if you wait till you arrive on island.

'AHA'AINA

‘AHA’AINA  – A Royal Celebration-held oceanfront  at the Royal Hawaiian Resort on O’ahu– pays homage to Helumoa , the legendary playground of Hawaiian Royalty.
Waikiki’s only oceanfront sit-down vignette dinner show is a culinary journey through history -before there was a luau, there was Aha’Aina-(translates to gathering for a meal) a feast of food, mele(song)and hula.
Sit-down dinner service, open bar and spectacular entertainment ( the royal family costumes are gorgeous, loved the inclusion of the United States military in the timeline of the history of O’ahu as well)
Another great luau for foodies-  Held on Monday night only, so suggest you book before arriving to the island.

One of the hardest parts of my job is being able to answer What is your favorite?
