Let’s go Upcountry Maui Dec 11

Going Upcountry Maui is as much a state of mind as it is an area of Maui, starting at Pukalani, climbing the slopes of magnificent Haleakala to the communities of Makawao, Kula, Keokea and Ulupalakua.

Wind thru green pastures

Rural Makawao welcomes visitors with hitching posts fronting the boutiques, restaurants and art galleries that are part of the eclectic personality of the area. Voted one of the top 25 arts-related travel destinations in the country, Makawao is the home of the Hui No’eau visual arts center. The center housed in a plantation-era estate home treats visitors to ongoing classes and exhibitions. If you happen to be visiting Maui over the Fourth of July weekend be sure and make time for the Makawao Rodeo, and take in the Paniolo(Hawaiian cowboy) spirit found here.

The farming community of Kula is best known as the home of some of the island’s freshest produce, especially the delicious Kula onion which is incorporated into most local dishes served on the island. Allow time to see the beautiful protea flowers and aromatic lavender at Ali’i Kula Lavender , just beyond Kula you will find the 20,000 acre Ulupalakua Ranch and Tedeschi Winery and Surfing Goat Dairy.

Waves on the north shore are huge and make it the perfect place to watch these professionals perform but please heed all posted safety signs if visiting during the winter months. In the summer months this stretch of shoreline is the perfect place to swim and sunbathe or just relax in the sun.

The Beautiful Flowers of Hawai’i May 16

Hawaiian flora is as diverse as the Hawaiian Islands – they grow on.  A subtropical region blessed with soil heavy laden with volcanic ash and a near perfect climate combine to make the Hawaiian Islands a perfect place to grow so many different types of flora. Regardless of where you travel throughout the islands you will find amazing flora in abundance in trees, shrubs and flowers , in some cases gorgeous flowers growing in the midst of ancient lava rocks.

Not all flowers that you see growing throughout the islands are native, many were introduced to the islands by various settlers over the years. The arrival of migrant works to the Hawaiian Islands brought a rich influx of  flowers and although they brought much beauty to the island unfortunately it led to the disappearance of many endemic varieties of flora because of the changes in the environment caused by the introduction of these species.

Hawaiian flowers are not known only for their beauty but also for the scents that waft through the air – often you can smell them before you see them because of their fragrance. Flowers such as the ones pictured here Hibiscus, Pikake and Hawaiian rose are used for perfumes, many varieties  of Orchids, Crown Flower, Tuberose, and Plumeria  are used to make beautiful leis. Several botanical gardens are located in the Hawaiian Islands and is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy so many of these beautiful flowers.

Hibiscus grown in so many colors ( Yellow is the Hawaii State Flower) is often used to convey a symbolic message. Did you know – that  if you see a woman with a hibiscus blossom worn on her left ear it means the woman is in a relationship and not interested in another man. If you see a woman with a hibiscus in her right ear – she is not dating anyone and is single. Just in case you ever wondered.

I encourage you to slow down a bit as you travel throughout the islands and do take time to enjoy these beautiful flowers and enjoy the tropical fragrance.

Amazing Locations
Congratulations on your engagement!
Let the search begin for the perfect location to have the ceremony of your dreams. As you begin to think about your guest list, wedding dates and possible locations I hope that you will include a destination wedding in Hawai’i on your list of options.
It is so easy to get married in Hawai’i:
** You do not need to be a resident of Hawai’i or even a citizen of the United States to be married in the Hawaiian Islands** No waiting period and no blood test** Simply complete a marriage license application and then you and  your future spouse must appear together before an official marriage license agent on the island you choose, currently the license fee is $60 cash ** Your marriage license will be valid for 30 days and after your ceremony a marriage certificate will be mailed to you.
Amazing locations – The islands of Hawai’i are truly one of the most romantic places on earth,so many beautiful options to choose from for your ceremony from simple and elegant on the beach such as this beach ceremony at Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows, lush rainforest throughout the islands, amazing botanical gardens, fern grotto, onboard a boat at sunset, by a waterfall, historic church or oceanfront chapel, beachfront restaurants such sa The Beach House Restaurant on Kauai , privately owned venues such as the White Orchid Beach House ,and I work with the wedding team at many resorts closely to plan my clients weddings as well. In addition several popular Luau venues such s Old Lahaina Luau on Maui and  Paradise Cove Luau on Oahu offer wedding packages before the luau and the wedding party can attend the luau for your celebration dinner or reception.

Fresh Orchids

So many Hawaiian Cultural Elements can be combined into your ceremony such as a lei (the symbol of love and aloha) worn by both the bride and groom whether a lei of flowers around the neck or a woven floral headband for the bride and an open strand of maile leaves for him. Blessed to have so many beautiful flowers that grow fresh on the islands such as orchids, plumeria, lokelani rose, ginger flowers, pikake, tuberrose just to name a few and when blended with more traditional wedding flowers -so romantic. Hawaiian Kahu (Ministers) will often incorporate their native language into the ceremony through beautiful chants or songs, others will dress in their native Hawaiian attire, many other beautiful cultural elements can be added.
Planning a destination wedding from afar can be stressful that is why it is so important to work with a travel professional and an experienced wedding coordinator so that together they can make sure you have the wedding of your dreams and no detail is left to chance. Every detail that you would normally have to consider when planning your wedding at home will be addressed from time, location, photographer, flowers, food, music, wedding cake, color scheme and wedding theme. Your travel professional will assist in coordinating accomodations, flights, rental cars for the wedding party as needed.
Once the ceremony is over,  you are already in the pefect place for your Honeymoon, whether you elect to remain on the same island for honeymoon or take a short flight to a neighbor island there are so many activities and experiences on each of the islands from sunset dinner cruises, waterfalls to explore, horseback riding, kayak to a secluded cove for a private picnic, oceanfront couples massages  the choice is endless.

Napili Lawn Ceremony ** photographer Ron Starr

Weddings at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua  are too special  not to deserve their own blog post.  Completing my series of three blog post about this amazing resort, there was simply no way I could just mention that they happen to do weddings at this resort in passing. Magical weddings at the Ritz-Carlton,Kapalua  capture the spirit of Hawaii with unforgettable ceremonies and fanciful receptions.  Whether an intimate ceremony and reception for just the bride and groom or a large wedding party the  dedicated wedding staff at Ritz-Carlton Kapalua can handle all the details from start to finish. Breathtaking views  from the cliffs  that overlook the ocean, expansive lawns, elaborate ballrooms  regardless of the theme of your wedding the team can handle everything from decor, culinary needs and wonderful personalized service.

The Honolua Chapel

Venues  such as the Honolua Chapel shown here ( once served as a place of worship for the surrounding plantation community) seats 60, plantation style A-frame structure with a small steeple for couples looking for a more traditional location, The Gazebo – located just outside the Honolua Chapel offers ceremonies with up to 100 guests a ceremony with refreshing trade wind breezes and dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean,  The Napili Lawn – panoramic ocean views of the Kapalua Cliffside and Honolua Bay, centrally located between the hotel’s  Napili Wing and the ocean, The Beach House Lawn – this expansive  manicured beachfront lawn is ideal for large private wedding parties and receptions, great place for a private lu’au rehearsal or reception and finally The Lava Point – extraordinary view for intimate ceremonies of two to four people. The point is located near the picturesque Kapalua Bay Golf Course signature fifth tee, backdrop of Hawaiian sunsets and crashing surf- only available for sunset ceremonies, most couples incorporate a circle of flowers and traditional Hawaiian ceremony.

Lu'au ** Photographer Ron Starr

Reception Venues such as the Beach House Lawn – a traditional Hawaiian lu’au shown here  (Photographer Ron Starr)  work well in this space for large groups, The Anuenue Room  offers an elegant reception location on property featuring a marble bar, hardwood floors in the center,  and art pieces created by Maui artists. The Anuenue rooms opens to a spacious open-air lanai with views of Honolua Chapel, the Bay Golf Course and the Pacific Ocean, could be used for cocktail hour and then full plated sit down dinner as well  and The Plantation Ballroom  with indoor space and an expansive outdoor lanai this venue provides an elegant setting for receptions.  Decorated with soft-colored wall coverings, hand-carved mill-work and moldings, beautiful crystal chandeliers with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean and West Maui Mountains.
Once you have decided upon your venue  the culinary team  can take care of arranging anything from  a Lu’au such as the one featured in this photo for your rehearsal dinner, international brunch, cocktail receptions followed by a plated wedding dinner, and then as your guests dance the night away and need a little extra energy to keep going surprise them with a Dessert & Specialty Coffee Station. Wedding Cakes by the pastry team are amazing to go along with your taste, theme or color scheme  you will have a hard time choosing between fondant or butter creme, french dots or swiss dots, tropical fruits or fresh island flowers – then have to choose  between flavors such as  Chocolate Kahula Cake, White cake with white chocolate Mousse and fresh raspberries or White cake with white chocolate mango mousse – this may be he hardest decision of all to make – or  if you can’t decide  have a cupcake station and choose a few of them.
Regardless of  which amazing wedding package that  you select,  there are many wedding A La Carte options that you can add to complete your magical ceremony.
